In 1996 a little fairy tale began in Montreal, Canada's second-largest city. DJ Static (not be be confused with the Danish DMC Champion) and Professor Groove began broadcasting their show "WEFUNK" on CKUT, McGill University's campus radio station. For a year and a half the duo produced late night shows, before moving in January 1998 to their prime-time Friday night time-slot. At the same time, with the help of an increasingly devoted circle of listeners, the show began broadcasting on the web. While internet radio is not the unique phenomenon it once was, Static and Groove have been lucky enough to keep theirs ad-free from the beginning. In December 2005, the two celebrated their four hundredth broadcast with the program "400th WEFUNK show featuring lots of party jams for the poppers & lockers, a blazing DJ Static old skool set, plus live rhymes, beatbox and trumpet."
WEFUNK Radio is an authentic mixshow. Entire shows are broadcast live with DJ Static on the turntables and Professor Groove mixing the sound from beginning to end [note: in fact, DJ Static and Professor Groove both DJ and host the show]. Listeners are spared the generic pop sounds ("Jiggymiggischniggi"). Instead, every show offers the finest choice of deep funk, underground hip hop, and uptempo breaks for b-boys and b-girls, from classic history-laden tracks of the golden age to the best of today. The two create a selection that makes every show worth listening to for music lovers, crate-diggers, and anyone looking to move beyond everyday commercial radio. Not only are a variety of guest DJs, MCs, and beatbox artists invited, but the show also features interviews such as show 386's talk with father of hip-hop culture DJ Kool Herc, as well as the latest breaking-battle and funk event news, all cast into the ether. Various extras complement the regular programming, such as "sample moments" detailing where people like Diamond D or Erick Sermon get their inspiration. Additional tributes to legends like the Furious Five solidify the show's programming.
WEFUNK Radio has combined quality, diversity, and word-of-mouth to create one of the best and reknowned hip hop radio shows, growing worldwide, and providing hundreds of download-ready archived shows. The two DJs can also be supported by purchasing their mix tapes.
As they stay true to their motto "Professor Groove and DJ Static team up and break it down to the deep funk, underground hip-hop, and rare grooves on the weekly show WEFUNK", we all wish them the best, and look forward to program 500!
