Studied at the Hochschule für Musik, then in East Berlin. At the International Jazz Festival in Sopot (Festiwal Jazzowy Sopot 1956) in 1956 with Krzysztof Komeda, by which time he had switched to vibes, later in the decade worked in a quintet with Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski. With the orchestra of BRT in Belgium from 1965 and in Katowice established the Orkiestra Rozrywkowa (Light Orchestra) of the Polish national broadcaster. Also wrote ballet music in a jazz vein.

He graduated at sixteen from the Secondary Music School in Poznan. His teachers included Wolfram Heicking and Boguslaw Schaeffer. Between 1953 and 1955 he led a quintet, including Stanisław Chwiłkowski, Ryszard Czaplicki, Jerzy Piątek, and Stanisław Lisek. From 1956 to 1958 he played the vibraphone in Krzysztof Komeda 's sextet, and in late 1959 and 1960, with the Jan Wróblewski quintet. He has been director and artistic director of the Polish Radio and Television Orchestra in Katowice, and professor at the Poznan Academy of Music. He has participated in many jazz festivals. In 2004 he received one of the highest Polish civil honours: the Order Odrodzenia Polski ("Order of Polonia Restituta").
