The WEFUNK 2009 Intro Remix Project

We're taking the Intro Remix Project worldwide!

Back in January 2008 we reached our 500th WEFUNK show, and to celebrate the momentous occasion we started the WEFUNK Intro Remix Project.

We put the call out out to some of our favorite Montreal producers and asked them to put their own twist on our show intro; a 2-minute mash-up of classic funk samples that started off every WEFUNK show since 1996.

Now in 2009 it's your turn! Get creative, and keep it funky... and put your personal mark on a WEFUNK tradition. We'll put all entries up here on the WEFUNK site for everyone to hear. And our favorites just might get into rotation on WEFUNK!

To get started, download the samples from our original intro. Only two of those samples are required (see below). The rest is up to you — get down and bless it with your own sound!

A few guidelines:

  • Begin with the entire George Clinton "welcome to station w-e-f-u-n-k" sample
  • Make the intro between 1-2 minutes long
  • Leave a 8-bar "break" somewhere in the middle for the voiceover
  • End with the Bobby Byrd "what you gonna play now" sample
  • We can't use intros that don't meet these criteria
  • A few people have asked what's allowed as far as sampling. Other than the two samples mentioned above, you can use as many or as few samples as you want (or none). Just make it sound hot!

Also, here's a tip for making your mix sound great on radio: use as little dynamics mastering as possible (compression/limiting). You need punch to avoid sounding flat on radio. Instead of extra compression, focus on the mix itself and keep instrument and sample volumes balanced against each other.

Remix submissions are closed for 2009.
